Welcome. As part of the Regional Sustainability Initiative (RSI) at Redefining Progress, we have developed the Scenarios for Sustainability (S2) toolkit for use by planners and economic development practitioners at the state and local level. S2 is a set of indicators that provide objective, quantifiable information about the degree to which policies, programs, and plans meet objectives for economic, environmental, and social sustainability.
As part of our ongoing process for updating and refining S2, we have prepared this short survey to generate feedback on the usefulness of some of the indicators included in the S2 package. The indicators below are grouped under three major domains – economic, environmental, and social – as well as a number of sub-domains. The indicators include some that are readily available and may already be in use by your agency, as well as those which are developed by RP for use in particular planning and policy settings in cooperation with our government, non-profit, and business partners. Some indicators are based on existing data while data for others would have to be generated through local surveys or research.
All responses will be kept strictly confidential. We are asking for information about you for our own internal analytical purposes, and thank you for your time and feedback. We look forward to reporting the results of this survey to you in the months ahead.
Sincerely,
John Talberth, Sustainability Indicators Program Director

The following is a list of indicators separated out by domain (including economic, environmental and social). Please rank the importance or applicability of this indicator and if you are currently applying it.
We are most interested in how useful you think each indicator is or can be for three major purposes: (1) as a tool for evaluation of plans, policies, and projects; (2) as an indicator of overall community health for monitoring and reporting purposes, or (3) as an indicator useful to businesses or residents making location decisions. Each question asks you to rate the indicator in terms of its usefulness and indicate whether or not you or your agency currently uses the indicator or something like it. By clicking on the indicator name, you can activate a pop-up box which explains the indicator in more detail.
