University Supervisors

Behind every great teacher . . . is an amazing student-teaching supervisor.

If you are looking for a part-time job that lets you remain active in teaching without the day-to-day commitment of classroom instruction, supervision of teacher candidates might be for you. NIU invites applicants for student-teaching supervisors in the following licensure programs:

  • Early Childhood Education (PreK – grade 2)
  • Elementary Education (grades 1 – 6)
  • Learning Behavior Specialist I (Special Education, K – 21)
  • Middle Level Teaching and Learning (grades 5 – 8)
  • Physical Education
  • Teachers of the Visually Impaired (all grades)

Supervisors oversee early field experiences (virtual observations) or student-teaching (combination of in-person and virtual observations).

Job duties include conducting an orientation meeting with teacher candidates at the beginning of the semester; reading lesson plans and providing feedback; scoring teacher candidates’ lesson implementation with a rubric; conducting reflective conversations after lessons; communicating with cooperating teachers; and collecting/submitting paperwork at the end of the semester. Training and support are provided by NIU staff.

Applicants must possess M.S. or M.S.Ed. degrees and hold (or have held) teacher licensure in the area for which they apply as supervisors. Student teaching supervisors are assigned to teacher-candidates in placements near residence and receive reimbursement based on mileage accrued.

NIU is a high Latinx-serving institution and the second largest teacher preparation institution in Illinois. The College of Education is focused on addressing teacher shortages in high-needs school districts and promoting diversity and equity in the educator workforce.
