CHHS/University Committees – Student Application

We are currently seeking College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) majors to serve as student representatives for college and university committees. Getting involved gives you a voice in college/university decisions; connects you with NIU administrators (such as the dean) and faculty; enhances your leadership skills; helps you understand the bigger picture of the university and college; and it looks great on a resume.

Please read the committee descriptions below and check all that you are interested in being nominated for. Please be sure to note the meeting times to ensure you will be available. You may select more than one committee. Applicants will be informed of nomination selections via ZID email on a rolling basis.

CHHS Committees
  • Meets 3:15-4 p.m. in-person and/or virtually twice a month on Mondays
  • Selects nominees for the Excellence in Teaching and Instructing Awards
  • Selects students for university committees
  • Assists in planning special College projects and events 
  • Promotes the projects and events
  • Serves on school and college grade appeal committees as needed
  • Graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to participate
  • Meets virtually from 9-11 a.m. every Friday (fall) and one Friday each month (spring)
  • Reviews all curricular changes recommended by the departments and schools of the college
  • One graduate and one undergraduate student selected
University Committees
  • Meets in person 3-5 p.m. monthly on the following Wednesdays: Sept. 6, Oct. 4, Nov. 1, Nov. 29, Jan. 24, Feb. 21, March 27 and April 24.
  • Participates in the selection of faculty committees by advising the president on the appointment of administrative officers.
  • Advises administration on the annual budget
  • Advises president on policy-making/ implementation
  • One undergraduate and an alternate are appointed
  • Meets in-person and/or virtually 12:30-3 p.m. monthly on the following Thurdays: in-person on Sept. 14; virtually on Oct. 12, Nov. 9, Dec. 7, Dec. 14, Feb. 8, March 7, April 11 and May 9.
  • Establishes general policies for undergraduate study; coordinates the intercollegiate aspects of undergraduate education; and in consultation with the colleges, determines policy for undergraduate studies, baccalaureate programs and semester-hour requirements for undergraduate majors and minors
  • One undergraduate student appointed by each college
  • Meets in-person and/or virtually from 12:30-3 p.m. on the following Thursdays: in-person on Sept. 21 ; Virtually on Oct. 19, Nov. 16, Dec. 21, Jan. 18, Feb. 15, March 21 and April 8.
  • Monitors and evaluates the university's general education program.
  • One undergraduate is nominated.
  • Meets virtually from 1-3 p.m. monthly on Mondays on Sept. 11, Oct. 2, Nov. 6, Dec. 5, Feb. 5, March 4 and April 1
  • Monitors and evaluates the campus environment from the perspective of its compatibility with, and support for, the learning process and the development of an appreciation for learning, and recommends to the Baccalaureate Council policies and programs to strengthen that environment.
  • Acts as an advisory board for the First- and Second-Year Experiences.
  • Establishes policies and procedures and selects the recipients for the annual awards recognizing innovative teaching practices and outstanding undergraduate educators at NIU.
  • Monitors and evaluates undergraduate mentoring programs as well as initiatives involving NIU alumni and students and recommends appropriate changes as necessary.
  • Reports its activities and recommendations related to purpose and duties to the Baccalaureate Council.
  • One student appointed by each college
  • Meets 10 – 11 a.m. monthly on Mondays
  • Establishes the general policies for graduate study
  • One graduate student is appointed
  • Student will also likely serve on one sub-committee of the Graduate Council
  • Meets 10 - 11 a.m. monthly on Mondays
  • One graduate student appointed from every college
