Designing Equitable Curriculum

Friday, April 21, 2023
12:00-1:00 PM Eastern / 11:00 AM-12:00 PM Central

This interactive workshop explores how Curriculum Innovation Cohorts help educators design culturally responsive, identity-affirming, and racially equitable curricula and instructional practices. Based on the Transformational Inquiry Method’s four learning domains, the cohort experience guides teachers to design dynamic curricula and strengthen their capacity to deliver instruction through a racial equity lens. In this session we compare well-known frameworks for culturally responsive teaching and draw from their common themes – taking a strengths-based approach, establishing psychological safety, using inquiry questions to guide reflection, curating content that represents and strengthens student identities; and creating assessments that guide transformational learning. We introduce assessment tools for curriculum and educator best practices. Finally, we discuss the rewards and challenges educators face in developing an equitable curriculum.
